How to Turn an Old Dresser Into Your new Nursery Changing Table

January 9, 2017

I received an email from an expecting mother who was looking for the perfect little changing table for her new nursery.  She had found a small dresser that she was drawn to.  It was already really cute, but she wanted to add a pop of “personality”. 🙂

IMG_3616

We decide to go with Annie Sloan’s Paris Grey with a pop of Pure White on the original hardware.

IMG_3630

I topped it off with some light distressing and two coats of Annie Sloan clear wax.

How cute is this changing table!!!

Now that’s a Kitchen Table!

September 15, 2015

A good friend of ours asked Chris to design a new table for his kitchen.  With the kitchen being the heart of his home, we wanted to make sure that not only did it function as a great kitchen table, but that it was a topic of conversation as friends and family gathered around it.  Chris started building the table with a large reclaimed wood pallet he found a few months prior.  The wood had been left outside so long that it had aged perfectly.

IMG_0220

After breaking down the pallet and building the table top, he went with a rich Minimax Early American stain and topped it off with three coats of Minimax Semi-Gloss Polyurethane.

The table was looking great, but he still had a few things to add for that additional “wow factor” our friend was looking for in his new kitchen.  After the table was completely dry, he added a metal trim around the entire table for that pop of rustic flare.

I painted the legs with Annie Sloan’s “Pure White” chalk paint to match his white kitchen cabinets…

A Pop of Yellow!

August 3, 2015

Picked up this great dresser while shopping at a local outdoor furniture consignment store.

It needed some work, but had soooo much potential!

I love it when I walk into a room and there’s a pop of color that surprises me.  With that in mind, I decided to paint this piece Annie Sloan’s Arles Yellow.

Screen Shot 2015-07-30 at 12.33.20 AM

After a good coat of Annie Sloan Clear Wax, I loved the color, but kinda felt like it was still missing a little “pizzazz”.  So I pulled out my Annie Sloan Dark Wax, added some Mineral Spirits and made a rich dark glaze to add to the Arles color.  A few brush strokes later….and Voila!

That was just what it needed!  It turned out just like I had envisioned…maybe even better.

Actually decided to leave the bottom of the dresser its original wood finish.  I thought it added another bit of character to the piece.

No sooner did I move this awesome piece into my home to take some pictures, it sold.  And what the buyer loved the most…you guessed it…the pop of color it would add to her room. 🙂

What a Perfect Little Desk

July 31, 2015

You guessed it…I was at yet another garage sale (can you believe it!) and I came across this cute little desk.  It was a tad bit boring, but had so much potential.  I couldn’t wait to get it home to give it a new lease on life!

It was so cute, I decided to go with Annie Sloan’s Old White chalk paint on the “body”…

and then for a pop of color and originality, I added one of my Faves…Annie Sloan Graphite to all of the original hardware as well as the top of the desk.

Mid Century Mod Oh My!

July 28, 2015

I happened upon an estate sale the other month, it was like finding GOLD! I fell in love with so many pieces in that family’s home.  There was a set of two cute little solid wood classic Mid Century Modern side tables. I knew they needed to make it in our truck!

IMG_4534

Perfect storage piece…

Original hardware…

IMG_4314

I decided to go with painting these vintage bad boys an Annie Sloan deep creamy Aubusson Blue.

Screen Shot 2015-07-28 at 12.28.47 PM

I could tell by the feel of the wood and that it had a glossy finish to it, that the Annie Sloan chalk paint may take a few more coats to stick, so I decided to save time and lightly sand the pieces so as not to have any many problems with my coats of paint.

Rarely do you have to do any prep work when using Annie Sloan chalk paint (that’s one of the reasons I love it so much), but I knew this was one of those times.

Two coats later…

I decided to keep the original hardware…just cleaned them up a tad.

Each of their tops open perfectly to reveal hidden extra storage inside.

These are classic pieces of antique furniture that will definitely give a pop of color and be the conversation pieces in any room.

Our Biggest Order Yet!

May 14, 2015

A couple stopped by the other month looking for a conference table for their new design studio they were in the process of opening.  They loved the design of our signature reclaimed wood table, but as we were talking, they mentioned that they were also looking for large desks for each new office in their studio.  Of course Chris quickly said, “Oh well I could just build those too!”  The couple talked it over with him and shared their vision of what they wanted their studio’s vibe to be, and next thing you know we are not only being hired to build their conference table, but also three beautiful desks to add to the unique vision they had for their new business’ home.

Large, sturdy, reclaimed wood desks is what they were looking for.  They wanted each of them to be different, but resemble each other in design. Accents of distressed metal, beautiful stained wood, bright pops of color and the list went on!  They had us so excited to go to work!

Our Signature Reclaimed Farm House Table

March 31, 2015

When we first moved into our home, we had been looking and looking for the perfect table for our dining room.  We wanted something uniquely beautiful, that stood out and really made that room look welcoming and fun!  It had to be functional and match our rustic vintage charm throughout the house.  We looked EVERYWHERE! I fell in love with so many store-bought pieces that cost more than our monthly mortgage!  We wanted those pieces, but couldn’t afford them.  At that time in our lives, we had too many things to buy to make our house a home, but not enough money in the budget for all of our expensive finds.

Out of the blue, Chris said, “I think I’ll just make our dining room table!”.  Of course I was thinking to myself, “Oh Lord! Here he goes again!”, but I remembered my vows and how I vowed to never question his abilities and his drive.  So with my approval, off he went to make us the perfect reclaimed pallet wood dining room table.  This is really where his personal story with Reclaimed Karma began.

Not too long after that conversation, Chris dragged me out to an industrial area near our home where he had found old pallet wood left as trash.  We both climbed to the top of the piles and carefully loaded as many as we could fit into the back of his truck.  That pile of wood definitely didn’t look like a beautiful dining room table.  But, as always, I had faith in my husband. 🙂

2014-12-10 13.13.54

Once home and unloaded, I left him to work.  The sound of YouTube “how to” videos played from his work space, and a few hours later I came out to find the beginnings of our soon-to-be table.  The wood looked nothing like it did earlier that morning.  It was starting to look like a unique piece of art.  I have to admit…I was impressed…he was really doing it!

photo-2

After building the top, and a lot of sanding, the wood grain was looking awesome and the finish was smooth.  Chris decided to add legs made from redwood and a unique “I” design connecting the four legs together down the middle, and for a more classic rustic look, we went with an “English Chestnut” stain.

Two coats of stain, three coats of polyurethane and some sanding in between.  The table was moved into our dining room and the direct sunlight made it a perfect fit.

Of course I had to add my finishing touches to the table, so I decided to take on the legs. I turned to my favorite Annie Sloan Country Grey Chalk Paint and with a little distressing and dark wax, I think the legs turned out looking amazing.

At the end of the day, we got exactly what we were looking for and for a fraction of the price!

This was the first major wood project my husband took on.  This one project has turned into him producing multiple tables a month for amazing families just like us, looking to make their house a home!

Pretty In Pink

March 24, 2015

Got a call the other day from one of my dearest girlfriends who was looking for a cute little desk for her bedroom.  She asked me if I thought I could find her one to fix up and make it her own.  I of course said, “Absolutely!”  I immediately started out on my search for a petite desk with potential.

The next day, Chris and I happened to stop by IKEA for a few supplies, and on the way home we made our usual “peak ins” at the neighborhood Goodwill stores.  I always beeline straight to the furniture section.  That day, there just happened to be a little desk left behind that was chipped up, scratched up, stained and missing a knob.

It definitely needed to be saved!  I immediately took a picture of the desk and sent it directly over to my girlfriend for the OK.  5 minutes later, the desk was hers. 🙂 Now I just needed to get to work.

My girlfriend knew exactly what she wanted.  She was a pink girl at heart, so she decided to go with Annie Sloan’s French Linen for the desk and a custom pink top with matching striped drawers.  I knew her taste, so this was nothing new to me.  Her kitchen chairs were pink…her living room coffee table was pink…so of course she would have a pop of pink in her bedroom/office!  How fun! I couldn’t wait to get started.

I started the desk project off by cleaning up the desk.  Yes I am definitely all about having unique pieces with imperfections all throughout my house, but this desk still needed some work to get it ready for painting.  The top of the desk and a few of the drawers were showing their age by the crackling of the paint.  Before I started painting, I made sure to fill in the crackled top with wood filler and sanded it down for a smooth finish.  If I would have painted directly over that imperfection, the paint would never have went on smooth and would forever continue to show cracking wear in sporadic  areas

Next, it was time for the Annie Sloan French Linen chalk paint…

photo 1-13

photo 2-16

To add a pop of her favorite color, we decided to add stripes to the drawers in two different shades of pink.

I started by mixing a little Annie Sloan Old White to a little Annie Sloan Emperor’s Silk until I had the perfect shades of light pink and dark pink.

I then painted all of the drawers the lighter shade of pink.

I think they turned out great. What a cute pop of color!

To finish it off, we changed out the old hardware for some new “bling”.

and pulled it all together with a pink accented top!

Her exact words were, “I LOVE IT!!! IT IS PERFECT!”

An Adorable Kitchen/Dining Room Table

January 19, 2015

The woman who sold this to me said it had been in her family 50+ year…I just knew I could bring it back to life!

2014-07-20 16.31.38

I immediately sought out my handy dandy assistant (my husband Chris) for help! 🙂 I asked him to help me sand down the top of the table (because I really wasn’t in love with the square design the tabletop had).  Chris grabbed our power sander and went to work!

2014-07-20 16.31.21

Next was the big decision..What color to stain the top??? Off we went to Home Depot to check out all the different stain colors.  After much debate we decided on rich deep chocolaty color “Kona”.  Screen Shot 2015-01-18 at 11.51.12 PM

I have to admit, it was a great choice.  I could tell from the first few strokes that it was going to look perfect!

2014-07-20 20.39.19

Ok, so with the tabletop looking Amazing, it was time to move on to the legs.  I decided to paint the legs an old white. The contrast turned out just like I imagined.  Perfect!

The table has a removable leaf so you can easily adjust this table from seating 4-6 to seating 6-8 people with ease!  It even has a cute little drawer at each end of the table for your extra utensils or napkins.

I’ve received many compliments on this table and I think it would be a beautiful addition to the perfect kitchen or dining room!
